A gorgeous album of 100 selected works from the Gallery's permanent exhibition Between Declarations and Dreams: Art of Southeast Asia since the 19th Century.
Between Declarations and Dreams is the first long-term exhibition devoted to the historical development of art in Southeast Asia from a regional perspective. The story begins in the 19th century, when most of Southeast Asia was under colonial rule, and continues through to the birth of nations and beyond. Featuring more than 300 works, the exhibition looks at how artists responded to changing historical, ideological and political tides, and how the meaning and expression of art in Southeast Asia was constantly negotiated as artists grappled with modernity. This album presents an overview of the exhibition through a selection of 100 works that speak of points of connection, as well as diversity, in art across Southeast Asia. Accompanying curatorial texts flesh out the themes and sections of the exhibition, constituting a thoughtful look at the art of this region.
