A buoyant and illuminating look at the art of Southeast Asia since the 19th century.

Between Declarations and Dreams traces the development of modern art of Southeast Asia by exploring four overarching themes which examine the main impulses to art-making in four time periods: “Authority and Anxiety” (the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century), “Imagining Country and Self” (1900s–1940s), “Manifesting the Nation” (1950s–1970s) and “Re:Defining Art” (1970s and after). The pairing of a thematised display and a loosely chronological approach and the inclusion of the 19th century are deeply considered curatorial decisions to establish new entry points in exploring the art histories of the region and further historicise featured works.

This richly illustrated catalogue provides an extensive discussion on the exhibition and offers curatorial insight into a task as monumental and intricate as positing the art history of a region as diverse as Southeast Asia. Both the exhibition and the catalogue set out to provide a solid platform to generate, interrogate and imagine the ideas of modern Southeast Asian art.
