Chua Ek Kay developed his own visual language by transcending both Chinese and Western art in his depictions of nature as well as urban places. The element of water features prominently in his practice. Apart from having the character 溪 ("stream" or "river") in his name, he also often painted water reflections, lotus ponds and rain-filled landscapes.
“I was free to express the world of the lotus in my mind without any restrictions of the East or the West, and unfettered by whether it was abstract or realistic.” - Chua Ek Kay
