Gallery & Co. seeks to democratise art and design through collaborations with Singaporean and international brands, artists and designers. The Artist Project invites a diverse mix of creative talents across the fields of art, graphic design and illustration to craft a visual response to a given theme.
“Siapa Nama Kamu?” or, “What is your name?” in Malay, is the title of the inaugural exhibition at the DBS Singapore Gallery. As the history of art in Singapore moves towards the future, it becomes clear that this story is hardly finished.
The products in this first exclusive capsule collaboration are usable and wearable forms of art created by artists and designers as a contemporary take on what Singapore means to them.
About the Artist
Jovian’s photography hovers between realism and romance. Towing the line between the simple and sublime. Using commonplace material, he investigates ever more rarefied forms of expression, attempting to express that which is immutable, stripped of time, space and particularity.
"These orchids were photographed at the now closed Mandai Orchid Garden, which housed and cultivated a significant number of heritage orchid hybrids that were homegrown and unique to Singapore.
After six decades of operation, the Garden permanently closed in 2011 to make way for the expansion of the national zoo.
Whilst some hybrids were bought over by other flower gardens in order to preserve them, the original state of the Garden has been displaced with its family of cultivars spread across Singapore.
As Singapore rapidly evolves, communities will need to relocate as well, to make way for new developments." - Jovian Lim
